Daring to Trust: Opening Ourselves to Real Love and Intimacy Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 412 ratings

The best-selling author of How to Be an Adult in Relationships explains how to build trust—the essential ingredient in successful relationships—in spite of fear or past betrayals

Most relationship problems are essentially trust issues, explains psychotherapist David Richo. Whether it’s fear of commitment, insecurity, jealousy, or a tendency to be controlling, the real obstacle is a fundamental lack of trust—both in ourselves and in our partner.

Daring to Trust explores the importance of trust throughout our emotional lives: how it develops in childhood and how it becomes an essential ingredient in healthy adult relationships. It offers key insights and practical exercises for exploring and addressing our trust issues in relationships. Topics include:

• How we learn early in life to trust others (or not to trust them)
• Why we fear trusting
• Developing greater trust in ourselves as the basis for trusting others
• How to know if someone is trustworthy
• Naïve trust vs. healthy, adult trust
• What to do when trust is broken

Ultimately, Richo explains, we must develop trust in four directions: toward ourselves, toward others, toward life as it is, and toward a higher power or spiritual path. These four types of trust are not only the basis of healthy relationships, they are also the foundation of emotional well-being and freedom from fear.

I read this book a year ago, as I have read many books this year, and I read a whole lot of books all the time. But this book stands out in my mind and heart as one that talks frankly about the requirements of a fair, trusting relationship- not only in intimate relationships but also in friendships. A beautifully written book, I was impressed with the author's writing style and depth. Not one to skim and be simple, this author comes from a deep foundation of knowledge and wants to let us in on his knowledge. Clearly laid out in a very organized manner, and precisely written to speak to us about a sometimes complicated subject without using complicated words, this author is one that has impressed me. Besides that, the messages through this book reaches my heart. Tender and devotional, this would also be a good 'christian' read for those christian marriages or relationships out there. Although God isnt mentioned. It is a deep and heartfelt book. The cover doesnt do it justice.

I read this book as part of a "book club" and we met weekly to discussion each chapter. I always love the sharing of personal experiences and life encounters to bring home a point. I found the book to be very enlightening and I enjoyed how it was broken down into different areas of trust in the life cycle.
I would recommend anyone that is dealing with issues surrounding trust from childhood disappointments to read this book. If one is not aware of their issues surrounding trust, I would encourage anyone experiencing challenges in relationships to read this book as it may bring awareness to childhood experiences that may be the root. Thank you for this great book!

This is only my second David Richo book, ( "How to be an Adult in Relationships" was the first) but I can say it has been the most helpful in a long line of self-help relationship books.

Speaking from his own experience and wealth of knowledge, Dr. Richo cuts right to the point. Explaining our driven nature to subconsciously connect--transfer the unmet needs from our past to our present relationships, he gives us the power and understanding necessary to change the very fiber of our ability to relate to others. It is life changing.

Buy the book...I can't imagine that you would possibly be disappointed!

This book was amazing, I’m not a person who reads but I will be reading this book twice!

Maybe I am more in tune with my emotions but some of the concepts in this book seemed a bit elementary to me. It is like a workbook, inviting you to engage in many self love activities. I think it would be a good start on a healing road of self love but for me, it did not go in-depth with some of the inner work required to achieve complete self love.

i strongly recommend this book to anyone who has trust issues holding them back from leading a fulfilling life. the author explains several different levels of trust, their origins and how to establish new trusting skills. he includes many stories and each section has a challenge to help you integrate new skills into your life. the book is easy to read and you feel the authors compassion for those who feel unable to trust even as adults.

"I trust myself with whatever you do". If you are looking for the kind of peace that trust in everything, especially yourself, will bring, this is your book. If you have been betrayed by someone else's lack of trustworthiness and are afraid that you won't be able to trust again, this is your book.

Richo is eloquent, masterful and will calm your mind as you read. A most beautiful read even at our most heartbreaking times.

Once again, Dr. Ricoh has highlighted the fundamentals in developing trust in a relationship. He is so helpful through his own personal insights and has been willing to learn from his clients the subtle nuances of trust, fidelity, honesty and so on. This book has been very enlightening. Thanks Dr. Ricoh.
