Blizzard in Bearskin (Darkmoon Vigil Book 1) Kindle Edition
A no-nonsense werebear from the Arctic Circle. A chatty werewolf from the Chicago Loop. Polar opposites, each looking for a fire to ward off winter’s chill...
Abram Chernov isn’t a man of half measures. After a string of personal tragedies, he left everything behind to become an arctic bush pilot. A rugged refrigerator of a man, he now spends his days content in solitude, delivering mail and supplies to the remotest corners of the Alaskan tundra. When he’s not piloting his ski-plane, or grabbing a drink in the tiny town of Yakutak, the gruff shifter roams the wilds in his other, more comfortable skin: that of a giant kodiak bear. He’s not lonely, he reminds himself constantly; solitude suits him just fine. Some days, he almost believes it.
Nikan Parande, a slick young werewolf from Chicago, wishes his employer would stop sending him on assignments to the middle of nowhere. He’s been looking for a more substantial, serious relationship than what the Boystown club scene has to offer, but the demands of his career at shifter-owned Holloway Industries have relentlessly gotten in the way. One day he’ll find true love, he tells himself in between flight delays and full moons.
By the time Nikan hitches a late night ride into Yakutak, he’s sporting nothing but his wits, his gear, and a hastily scrawled out name... The name of a local bush pilot who’s supposed to be sympathetic to shifter causes. A small, remote silver mining operation—owned by the werewolves of Holloway Industries—has gone completely dark, and it’s Nikan’s task as a newly recruited security specialist to find out what’s happened. Although eager to prove himself, he won’t get far without Abram’s help. Together, this unlikely pair of shifters will face subzero temperatures and supernatural horrors in the land of the midnight sun. While struggling to survive the coming storms, they might even kindle a new flame - in each other's arms.

About the author
Rex Blackbridge has spent his life bouncing between two worlds: the steel and concrete jungle of downtown Chicago, and the pristine wilds of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He has a deep fascination for both environments, and tries to share their magic with his readers.
In Rex's tales of gay m/m paranormal romance, the big city and the vast wilderness are equally savage gardens, where humans live largely in ignorance of the monsters in their midst. He loves bringing that duality to his protagonists' relationships as well, pairing up confident, powerful men with shy, nerdy ones, stirring in a dash of danger, and seeing what happens. Usually what happens is pretty steamy.
When he's not putting words on the page, Rex enjoys cooking, running, nerding out over nerdy things, and spending quality time with his partner.

A Grizzly shifter with a past to run from, makes like a human bush pilot in the remoteness of Northern Alaska where he can live and work in his own time and on his own terms. He’s a bit like Gentle Ben with a two-seater bush plane. The locals like the big man enough for him to get by, and they know nothing of his hidden alter-ego.
Investigating the unexpected silence from a company outpost in Northern Alaska, one member of which was his mentor, a young wolf shifter seeks out the special abilities of the Grizzly pilot to assist in solving what is assumed to be a disaster of supernatural proportions.
I enjoy shifter stories and particularly those that bring two kinds of shifters together, to work and to play. The bones of an interesting premise are definitely in The Blizzard, but as I often am with novella length offerings, I feel deprived of the details.
Don’t misunderstand; this story follows a well plotted beginning, middle and end. Its well written and there is a likability to the main characters. If it wasn’t so, I would not care that I didn’t hear enough about Abram’s Awakening and what life-changing event within it sent him into self imposed exile. I would not care about how Kinessa found Nikan and guided him through his own Awakening, became his best friend as well as mentor, and have a better understanding the depth of her loss would mean to him. I wouldn't care whether the arctic vamps took their rampage further and involved other members of Abram’s small circle. I can be content with the joint flight into the sunset, but I still want to know more about the blending of such essentially disparate lives.
Its a fast story with a good skeleton and enough depth to make it a good, quick read. I liked it enough, and the characters enough, to want more. And that’s just me…
Also, there were a few unanswered questions that contributed to the unbalancing of the story line. Abram had a rough “Awakening”, “made some messes, hurt some people” and had to leave his home state of Washington. What exactly happened, did he kill some people? Was he run out? Did he escape in the night and that’s how he faced no consequences? He stated that he’d had a mate previously. What happened to him, and did it have anything to do with what happened in Washington? How was it that Nikan’s parents had no idea that he was a werewolf? In that case, how did he become one? Add to this no actual character development, and then after less than 48 hours and 1 less than stellar roll in the hay, Abram decides to come out of isolation and move in with Nikan? Really? And the epilogue just has them on the plane together, with Nikan secretly praying that he actually is able to get Abram a job as he promised, and readers still don’t know what the next step is after he reports what happened out at the mining camp. I assume that at least some of these questions will be answered in the next book, but I’m not interested enough to move forward.
I really enjoyed this short story. Romance wasn't the major focus in this story. Abram is a bear shifter who lives in freezing cold Alaska and flies a plane in bad snow storms. Nikan is a wolf shifter who has to travel to Alaska to check on some missing co-workers (and a good friend). Abram agrees to fly Nikan to the base camp to check it out. The guys get stuck in a very bad storm, and run into a not so nice situation.
For not wanting to really get involved, Abram finds he enjoys Nikan's company. They form a good camaraderie and eventually have a night together. The time together is short, but it leaves a big impact on the guys. The page said it was only 16 pages, but it felt so much bigger than that. I liked the way the author let the characters develop before throwing them together. It made it more believable for me, especially since it was so short.
this one was short but good. We have Abram, the werebear, and clearly dominant, and Nikan, the werewolf and clearly submissive. First thing, I find that hilarious just becuase i would expect the reverse between two differen't were creatures like them. But I can live with it, it works. Nikan is there to find missing coworkers and a friend. He needs Abram to help him get to the mine somewhere in Alaska to find out what happened. What he finds is somewhat expected as you get to know Abram and what he has found lurks in the cold there. The two getting together works for me, it's cute, and they fit together as far as their personalities go. The writing is great, only a few missed quotation marks here or there but nothing detracting from the story itself.
