Unbeautiful (Unbeautiful Duet Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 1,018 ratings

Emery:

You want to know my secrets? What lies beneath the pretty? The scars I can’t let anyone see? The scars tied to my secrets?

On the outside I appear normal. Some might even say perfect.

They say that I’m a pretty girl. They say I should be happy. They say that I have nothing to be angry about. That I’m popular. A cheerleader. That I’m perfect.

But all they see is what’s on the outside.

On the inside I’m raw, open, bleeding. Scars that can’t seem to heal the wounds.

Carrying dark secrets about who I really am.

How afraid I am to tell the truth.

And it’s slowly killing me.

Ryler:

Tattoos. Piercing. Scars. The guy who can’t speak.

Gothic freak. Mute. Punk. I’ve heard it all.

They say that I’m probably dangerous. They say people should stay away from me.

They don’t know what’s hidden beneath the scars. Beneath the piercings and tattoos.

The secrets I keep hidden beneath the silence.

Maybe if they knew, they wouldn’t fear me so much.

Then again, maybe they’d fear me more.

Wow. What was that? It was awesome, that’s what it was. I went into this totally blind and let me tell you, it was bizarre and I loved it. I couldn’t put this story down because I was dying to know what was going on. There was something towards the end that I never saw coming, but once it was revealed I was all “A-HA!”

Go ahead and read the synopsis, it won’t give anything away. As you can see there are some serious secrets that both Emery and Ryler keep, but this installment only started to chip away at what those secrets might be. I don’t think the anything has even hit the fan yet. It’s going to be crazy and I’m going to be biting my nails. I had a knot in my stomach almost the entire time I was reading this story, but don’t get me wrong, I loved it. At one point Emery said she might get sick, and I swear I was thinking the same thing. There’s SO MUCH DANGER in this book…and it’s crack!

Let’s talk MCs. They are both gorgeous, insanely gorgeous. On the outside they look like opposites, with Emery being perfect, like a doll. Ryler is gorgeous in that bad boy way that speaks to all women. But that’s on the outside. It was the look in their eyes, the way they moved, the way they carried themselves that ultimately sparked the attraction. Then these two found out they had a bit in common, even if what they told each other was still vague. I wanted to know more and I was almost pushing my kindle to get them to spill secrets, but sadly I will have to wait.

So even though there’s danger and total insanity going on there was still time for a romance. It only just started but the attraction was undeniable and frankly, I wish these two could catch a break so we could get a serious kissy session. If what we had is a preview…well, let’s just say it will be divine and intense and totally hot. (It’s almost killing me to write this review and NOT start book 2). ;)

The ending…let’s just say I started to get some answers but then I actually had even more questions. Book 2 is a must.

What didn’t I like? Nothing. I loved every single page and word of this. I kid you not.

Rec this? Hell yes! If you love an intense story with plenty of suspense and a romance to boot, Unbeautiful is a must for your TBR.

I have probably read around 10 of Jessica’s novels, which doesn’t touch the surface of all that she offers. If I am having a difficult time finding something to read, she is one of the first authors I look to find that perfect book. She does a fabulous job engaging the reader in all of her books, I have never read any that I felt stuck in. She has written many series which I absolutely adore such as: Death Collectors (x editions), and Ella and Micha. Both of these for the romance lover are perfect, and you don’t have to give up the characters after one book!

Unbeautiful takes place in a seemingly twisted world, and is told through both Emery and Ryler’s point of view. Emery lives her perfect world, but she is really just a shell of who she really is. Her Father and Mother treat her poorly as if she is fragile, but yet with aggression. She has a brother that she hasn’t seen in a long time, she worries about what has happened to him. Emery is given pills by her mother, and she stops taking them because she thinks she is losing her reality. She constantly battles the past and what is real, she finds some solace in her writing.

Ryler is one of the most interesting characters as he can’t speak, he has to sign or mouth words to people. He served some time and just wants to be done with the rough gambling lifestyle he has been living. Yet, he still can’t keep everything at bay…it seems like he always has to be involved, no matter how hard he tries.

Unbeautiful took me on a ride to alternate reality, where I am unsure what is really going on with Emery. She has so many things buried deep in the poetry she writes, you as a reader have to pay attention. The only reason I gave this a four not five stars was simply that I felt it took a while to get to the important details of the story. Before I knew it I was at the end of the book not sure where to go from there, as I didn’t feel like there was much resolution. Don’t worry though, it’s still worth reading! I dove into detective mode trying to figure out what really happened to Emery. Is her Dad evil, and is her Mother making up stories? Why did Ryler lose the ability to speak? Are they all connected in the bigger picture? These are all questions you will be asking yourself, but as the story fleshes itself out it slowly unravels. Also, Untamed is releasing soon so the reader doesn’t have to wait too long for resolution. I just love Jessica’s writing, I feel like she really pushed herself with this book! I haven’t read anything by her quite this dark and twisted. I think as she normally writes more HEA, this was a good risk for her. Unbeautiful isn’t the typical romance where the reader swoons for hours over the love senses. This is a slow built up, and then a combustion with a smoldering effect. Both Ryler and Emery have the world against them, will they find a way to be together?

I loved this story - good amount of drama and tension and exciting characters. It's perhaps best not to do my own summary of the story, because this is a short read (just over 200 pages) so I will probably spoil it. But I liked both Emery and Ryler. Emery somewhat reminds me of my 18-year-old self. The story has a good flow to it, it was easy to read a lot in one go and when I had to put it down, I couldn't wait to get back into it. It is also unpredictable, which is a nice bonus. It ends at a good point ready for book 2. I have previously read the 'Fallen Star' series by Jessica Sorensen, so thought I had some idea of what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't what I expected. Only annoying thing is now I'm going to have to shell out for book 2 in this series as I enjoyed this one so much.
