Blaze (Tranquility Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 366 ratings

What if you didn't care what others thought of you? That you knew you could, and would, do the dirty work for the greater good?

Lady Bethany clawed her way to the ranks of the Elven Service's top military elite. They only knew her as their foul-mouthed, hard-nosed champion against magic, and not the daughter of a goddess. Her life protecting those under her care is disrupted when her twin sister returns from exile, addicted to magic and human sacrifice. Her purpose? To overthrow their own mother.
Innocents will die unless Bethany can take the life of her own sister.

For the greater good.

Review

This isn't a book for readers who like their women whiny, wimpy, and well-behaved. Krista D. Ball doesn't break the epic fantasy mold with this volume, but she does something arguably more difficult: she picks up the tropes, dusts them off, and restores a realism that they usually lack.-Ada Hoffman, Amazon Review

It's rare for me to give a 5 star rating but this book was amazing. The plot was interesting and Beth was a freaking badass demi goddess the fact that you felt what she felt when she started to fall for Arrago was beautiful and heart wrenching. This author definitely won me over with Beth. Finally a book where the female lead isn't whiny and powerful or weak. You will not be disappointed with this book. And this is my own personal review no money was received nor was it given to me for free.

This is actually a very good read by Krista D. Ball, however I may not agree with the ending. There is so much destruction and loss of life. This is a story of Bethany and Sarissa who are twins as well as Alexia's daughters. Sarissa has turned to black magic and is out to kill her sister, she feels it was Bethany's fault that she was exiled. Bethany is a warrior who is known as the champion of magic who feels sorrow for her sister yet will do all she can to defend her people. She does not want them to know that she is Alexia's (the goddess) daughter. This is a great book filled with adventure, quarrels, war, bloodshed, love and lost.

Blaze, written by Krista D. Ball, is book one of her Tranquility series. This is the first book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. The story had me hooked from beginning to end and left me wanting to know more about these characters and their world. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Overall, the writing was solid and it had the perfect array of characters, enough to make the story varied and interesting but not enough to be confusing. Even when one-off characters (like the soldiers) appeared they were acknowledged realistically instead of seen as disposable which was nice.

Bethany is the daughter of a goddess and a high commander who earns respect from both the training soldiers and reader. It's clear she has a lot of responsibility she tries to keep up with, and makes hard and sympathetic choices. There were times I felt she acted a tad out of character. mostly when Arrago was around. (Her looking forward to a "day of fun.", being oblivious how it must look to others having him around, and in general not seeing why she falls for him. Her vision is a great reason in the beginning which leaves her flustered (Ioved that), but after that it didn't work anymore so I never felt he earned her affections properly.)
The antagonists were an odd couple, but worked. However the overall backstory was confusing. (Their mother's interventions. The relationship between the sisters.) And the antagonists motives was confusing too. (How does magic work within the world, how do others react to it?)

Regardless, the story was still a dark fantasy with a woman who knows how to kick butt, and thus an enjoyable read.

This was a very interesting take on elves, humans, gods, and goddesses. It kept my interest throughout. My only gripe is with the male protagonist. He is rather a weakling in the beginning of the novel and you can see just how young and immature he is. I'm not sure why Bethany falls in love with him. At the end I found myself disliking him a lot. Actually, I was down right angry at him! What he did was childish in my opinion. I do however, have hope for his character. I think he will begin to mature and will realize where he went wrong. Otherwise, I say forget him girl! Also, I HATED Bethany's sister. Wow. If I could I would have jumped into the book and ripped her heart out. What a despicable woman!

The first part of the book felt a bit confusing as if this was the middle of a series. These are not caricature characters. They have secrets. They change and grow. Soon I was devouring this original soon to be epic story. Warning: kidnapping and rape trigger.

Engaging story. Solid characters. Interesting cultures. Mixed into sturdy tale of daring do. Using phrases from an ancient myth to stitch it all together creates just the right amount of foreshadowing. Highly recommended for readers unafraid of a strong female lead.

Only negative is it's a bit heavy handed on the pro abortion theme.

It was my first attempt at a book by K. D. Ball, I have to confess it was a real stunner, I have not read this much of fantasy, epic and adventure in one book for a long time, if the next ones prove to be of the same quality she could certainly compare to Robert Jordan "Wheel of time". Cannot wait to read the next book...
