I was able to load the clip yesterday. It stores music in much the same way as my cell did. Sync it to the computer then drag and drop the music files into the sync column.
Here are the pros-
- Very small
- lightweight, probably won't break if you drop a couple of times, unless you step on it
- 4GB held 876 songs
- Pretty easy to figure out
- Battery lasted 12 (6 AM - 6 PM) hours using ear buds (skull candy) moderate volume (Listened at home till the battery died to test it)
- Sound quality is as good as my cell was, which I thought was pretty good
- Expandable; can add another 16 GB of memory with a micro SD chip
- I clipped it on my shirt collar, as opposed to in a shirt pocket, so it won't get crushed if I lift something heavy
- Works with MP3, WMA, and Secure WMA music files. These are the formats that Windows Media Player uses.
The Cons-
-I would like to see a wall charger included in the package. I wanted to purchase one from Amazon when I purchased the player, but the reviews I read on a couple of different ones, said they fried their players when they used them. More research needed.
-I personally didn't like the earbuds/headphones that came with them. I didn't listen to them at all so I can't attest to their sound quality. They are the foam type that don't go in the ear canal. They felt like they would fall out very quickly. I used my Clip with Skull Candy Inked ear buds. They go in the ear canal and have great sound. They also block a lot of the loud machine noise around me.
This review may be premature if my opinion changes I will try to came back and update.
Update 7/31/11
The player has been working great, however the plastic spring clip broke off this past week, not too bad for 6+ months of daily usage.
It wasn't dropped or damaged it just broke off one morning when I went to clip it on my collar. Since it is warranted for a year I have contacted Sandisk about repair or replacement. I have an RMA from them and will be returning it soon. I'll try and let you know how that works out.
I have been using a wall charger with it. As I've seen on other reviews and from the comment left about my review, as long as the charger output is 5 volts it works without damaging the player. Here's one strange thing I've noticed, if I use the wall charger only I get about 8 hours of playing time on a 8 hour charge. If I charge on the computer for a couple of hours then plug it into the wall charger for 5+ hours I get about 11 - 12 hours of playing time. The same goes with only a computer charging. Somehow the combination of the 2 gives it a longer lasting charge.
I still think this is a great value and have ordered another to have as spare, and to use when I send my current one back.
Update 8/13/11
I have received the replacement clip already. Only 1 week after sending in the old one. The only charge I incurred was the padded mailing envelope I purchased to send it in. I'm very satisfied with the level of customer service I received in dealing with Sandisk.
Update 4/23/13
I finally killed the replacement for the original. They aren't submersible. I forgot to remove it from my pants pocket and it got into the washer. I put it in the rice container for a week but it appears to be dead. I'm still very pleased with the performance and longevity of this MP3 player.
-Size. One of the smallest, coming in at just barely larger than an iPod shuffle 3rd generation.
-Built on clip. Not only does this help TREMENDOUSLY for workouts, but the new clip+ features an improved, more stable iPod shuffle-like clip.
-Spot on control layout. I have used the first clip, and this new clip+ improves upon the controls in every way.
-Durability and feel. AMAZING. Its smooth, durable, very solid, and very well built. A great jump from the original clip.
-Good battery, recharges FAST through USB. *Update* The Sansa clip+ does NOT last 15 hours on a single charge. I have used this player for a couple weeks, and mine lasts 8-10 hours, more or less, playing WMA VBR ~300Kbps at Half Volume. It does hold charge over days, but like other report, the battery VERY QUICKLY dies past half charge. I was extremely surprised when I decided not to charge and let it go to half meter, and in maybe an hour or two the "low battery" warning came up and my player died! I would rather have an accurate meter than a meter that drops slowly, then suddenly falls off a cliff after passing the half way meter.
-Sound quality is perfect! I get the same high quality as my bulky Zen Vision:M. If you are interested in a compact AND high quality player, this is it!
-Built in radio. What can I say? This is a BEAST feature. I can listen to some stations and even tune into the TVs playing in my gym above the treadmills.
-Built in microphone. Not necessary, but it's a really cool feature and if I ever want to record my guitar but don't have another mic this would work.
-8GB flash hard drive. Plenty as a workout MP3 player.
-Micro SD slot. OH YEAH, the 32GB micro SD cards just came out. That equals=40GB total memory in the size of a matchbox.
-Support for slotRadio SD cards. These 1000 song cards provide a fast mix that can be inserted into the micro SD slot.
-Normal mini USB. No stupid custom cables or adapters. This MP3 player of course has a normal mini USB slot, so if you lose the cable that comes with it you probably have others lying around...I have like 6, haha.
-A screen! Yes, its almost as small as a shuffle but with a screen! This is a REALLY helpful feature.
Cons:
N/A
Yeah, I literally don't know any problems with the MP3 player. Comment if you think there are any problems!
I would recommend this MP3 player to ANY ONE, first of all, because its so feature packed and well built. But, if you need a workout MP3 player specifically, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WHAT YOU NEED! And at the extremely low price, this is a steal! I would rate 10/5 stars but amazon doesn't provide bonus points :D
*Update*
After over a year, this player still holds strong. The battery life still seems good enough, but has possibly decreased over time. The player itself hasn't broken and the clip is still sturdy. I bike with this thing to and from school every day and have used it during workouts numerous times over this past year, and it still is my go to portable music player. Awesome product, and a steal for the price!
*Update 3/11/2012*
Some crazy news since my last update on this product. It has been two years! Recently the left audio channel began going out, so I took the time to research and fix the problem. I opened up the player by prying the back shell open, starting at the audio jack, found that one of the solder points next to the audio jack was losing contact, and glued the contact down with super glue. I recommend against gluing, and instead you should solder this loose contact for the longest lasting results! Search "clip+ loose jack" at head-fi.org to find the topic I used for reference!
While opening the player, I accidentally broke off the clip. I was disappointed, but I super glued the the clip and attached it back on the player. It even works without coming off, but it doesn't have the recoil it once had, so I keep the player in my pocket when possible.
I also learned about a nifty thing called Rockbox, a replacement firmware for most MP3 players, including the Clip+. Go to their website and download the current release NOW! I was skeptical at first, but loading Rockbox made my experience with the Clip+ 100% more awesome. I changed the custom theme to Classic/Original, and the theme now almost perfectly resembles the original Sandisk firmware! Add on top of that better battery life, more user options, advanced sound quality (as good as the Sandisk quality), games, and now an ACCURATE battery meter! I honestly don't believe any MP3 player to come can top the Clip players. Give me a Clip with 30+ Hour battery life, and then we will have the best workout/activity MP3 player ever made.
Top reviews from other countries
I put a 32 gb SD card in it and so it has tons of room. I just drag & drop music and audiobooks into the folders when I have it plugged into my computer (PC). I has more space as my big old 32 gb iPod.
It's tiny and light. Clips on my sleeve or jacket front. (I did buy more comfortable earbuds. Not a big deal.)
SLIGHTLY larger in size to the iPod Shuffle but with the SD card it has about 18 times the amount of space.
It plays Audible books & remembers where you left off.
The battery life is great.
