From the manufacturer
People tend to presume this is our cheeky way of re-writing Matador’s storied past to make it even more (ahem) storied. To somehow portray ourselves or the recording artists in some glamorous or outlandish fashion. You know, the time Jon Spencer slept with a Cadillac. Johan had 4 slices of pizza before 11:30 am, that kind of thing.
Suffice to say, we’re counting on the general population — old and young — being as brain-scrambled as we are, and even if they’re not, we’re confident that our catalog campaign and accompanying commissioned visuals from ‘Eat To Survive’ auteur Jeff Mahannah are powerful enough to do a Chris Nolan memory-wipe / reset.

Editorial Reviews
Featuring the return of bandmembers Dave Grohl, Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan, plus guest appearances from Elton John, Trent Reznor, Alex Turner, Jake Shears and James Lavelle. Joshua Homme has written the most intense, personal and beautiful songs of his career. While the thunder of Queens past is still evident, there are a number of gorgeous ballads — meditations on time passing, the struggle to create art, and the nearness of mortality. The music features some of Homme's finest guitar work, at times recalling past greats such as Brian May or George Harrison, at other times uniquely his own

Keep Your Eyes Peeled: 7/10. Would be a standout song on many other albums, but not up to par with the rest of the album. Well-placed as an intro song, but didn't really stick with me.
I Sat By the Ocean: 8/10. A good, fun song sandwiched between two rather gloomy pieces. Has a twinge of melancholy lurking in the background, but it keeps an upbeat sound throughout.
The Vampyre of Time and Memory: 9/10. QOTSA's probably best known for the fast-and-heavy sound evident in songs like Go With the Flow and 3's & 7's, but I've always felt that many of their best efforts have been their softer songs like In the Fade or Make It Wit Chu, and this is no exception.
If I Had a Tail: 9/10. This song's intro makes me giddy just about every time I hear it. The whole thing is excellent, though. It's light. It's whimsical. It's great for roadtrips.
My God is the Sun: 9/10. Songs like My God is the Sun are QOTSA's bread and butter. It starts out fast and heavy and doesn't let up at all for the whole rest of the song. I don't think it's as good overall as some of their other songs of this sort, like the ones I mentioned under The Vampyre of Time and Memory, but it invokes a sense of grandeur and power that's lacking in those other pieces.
Kalopsia: 7/10. Wasn't crazy about this song. It's grand and theatric, as well as very dark (and I enjoy these things), but it takes a certain mood to enjoy. It's just not always listenable.
Fairweather Friends: 10/10. This was a joint effort between Homme & Co. and a handful of other accomplished musicians, including Dave Grohl and Sir Elton John, and the eclecticism and talent of the artists on this song shows clearly. Epic and funny.
Smooth Sailing: 8/10. Heavy beat, crunchy guitars, sexed-up lyrics. Classic QOTSA material right here.
I Appear Missing: 10/10. Not much can be said about this song without simply repeating the gushing praise already heaped upon it. I Appear Missing is a serious contender for the best rock song of this young decade and was an instant favorite of mine. In a lot of ways, it feels like the culmination of all the tension simmering underneath QOTSA's music for the last several years.
...Like Clockwork: 10/10. QOTSA hit it out of the park with this thoughtful and beautiful song. It's the perfect ending to the album, especially in light of what Josh Homme has said about writing the album: "I'm usually [a guy who] would spit on the floor and say `let's go.' I've always played my way out of trouble...People usually try and run from chaos. But this time, wherever it was most uncomfortable, that's where I decided to go."
I'm glad Queens of the Stone Age made the effort to dredge through the uncomfortable things in life to inspire this album. It's paid off a hundredfold and taken them to new heights as musicians. ...Like Clockwork has of course drawn comparisons to Songs for the Deaf, but I think each of those albums was perfect for the time it was released. Songs for the Deaf needed to be made, but then Queens of the Stone Age needed to move on to ...Like Clockwork, and the music world is better off having heard them both.
Fans of the band's earlier work will find the album to be a homecoming of sorts. Not only does "...Like Clockwork" reunite Homme with "Songs For The Deaf" drummer and fellow Crooked Vulture Dave Grohl (who plays on the bulk of the album), but it also brings Nick Oliveri back into the fold. The troubled bassist who played on "Rated R" and the aforementioned "Songs" only to find himself booted from the band in 2004 when the water got too hot provides backing vocals on two tracks ("If I Had A Tail" and "Fairweather Friends") which incidentally feature contributions from on-and-off collaborator Mark Lanegan. What more could you want? Trent Reznor, you say? Sure. Elton John, maybe? Definitely! The smörgåsbord of "Fairweather Friends" crams all of the usual suspects and then some into a single track that nearly bursts at the seams and pays tribute to the band's storied past and present.
Fans of "Songs For The Deaf" will find cuts such as "If I Had A Tail" and the surf-rocker "I Sat By The Ocean" to be familiar territory, but it's where Homme really steps out of the comfort zone that the album really comes to life. "The Vampyre Of Time And Memory" finds the frontman crooning amidst a psychedelic backdrop that sounds more like something from the '60s than it does '90s stoner-rock. Homme himself suffered a setback when a surgery-gone-wrong in 2010left him bedridden for months at a time. Documenting his experience on "Vampyre," Homme sounds vulnerable and human in a way that he has never before expressed. Likewise, "I Appear Missing" and the closing title track are at times haunting and touching, only furthering the multi-faceted nature of the band. It's quite apparent that "...Like Clockwork" is as much about Queens regaining their footing as it is about Homme confronting his inner demons. Granted, the album probably isn't the supposed return-to-form some might have been expecting, but what it delivers instead is a peak behind the curtain of a modern-rock legend while offering the sort of heart and soul that is severely lacking in today's modern rock scene. Keep your ears peeled, your mind open and enjoy the show.
